Why did I choose this face?

Blogging from my phone, this is a new one. So i apologise in advance for any formatting problems this causes and that it probably won’t be a very long post (that’s probably a blessing).

I haven’t really been keeping up with blogging about Doctor Who but there was a moment in the most recent episode that made me just want to high five everyone in the world, so i thought i would do a bit of a “how it’s going at the moment” post.

So far i have been really REALLY enjoying the episodes. I like that we don’t have all weird complicated background stories with Clara’s life…i like that she is getting quite smart and sassy but not enough to be better than the doctor…which sounds awful but i get a bit grumpy when everything suddenly gets all about the companion and they save the day more than the doctor does. Maybe that’s why I’m enjoying the Clara/Doctor dynamic right now because i like it much more when the companions are just ordinary yet extraordinary people..they don’t need to be immortal or secretly an alien or something like that, just awesome people.

Maybe that’s old fashioned of me, i don’t know.

The two-part episodes we’ve had so far have been great! When you end an episode wanting to see the next one that’s a good enough sign for me.

The latest episode with the vikings was a lot of fun. We come across episodes like this one every now and again where there’s quite a lot of comedy and everything seems a bit random and there’s some odd things like speaking baby and OH I SUDDENLY JUST HAPPEN TO HAVE THE SOLUTION TO EVERYTHING..but it’s Doctor Who! That’s the fun of it.

Now i must admit..i don’t watch Game of Thrones (don’t kill me) but i saw a lot of people excited that Maisie Williams was in this episode. I had no strong feelimgs either way really because i know nothing about her and haven’t really watched her in anything but she seemed great!

Okay the bit that made me want to high five everyone on the planet…this was the highlight of the episode for me…

**SPOILERS COMING**

The whole sort of sequence where the Doctor said he finally knew why he’d chosen his current face and how they weaved in Peter Capaldi having been in an episode with David Tennant…i just loved that.

I just thought…alright…that’s clever…bravo! And it totally works and it’s a lovely idea.

Plus Ten and Donna were probably my favourite combination so any excuse to see a bit of one of their episodes for me was a bonus.

I really think Peter Capaldi has grown as the Doctor in the series. I enjoyed his sort of sociopathic awkwardness at the beginning and I’m glad there are still elements of that but we’re seeing a lot more emotion and caring and things now which seems a lot more Doctor-like to me. Strange phrase because i suppose Doctor-like is..by definition..however they make him. But you know what i mean!

Interesting seeing the clip for next week…does that mean Maisie Williams will be cropping up more? I suppose we’ll have to see.

Eleven’s hour is over now…

Hello! Gosh..by sometime towards the end of January there will be a considerably less amount of stress and uni work over here…until the next lot pops up of course but…short post for now! But i couldn’t leave this out!

The Time of the Doctor!

**MANY SPOILERS LIKELY**

I think i need a rewatch mostly….

The episode confused me..quite a lot. I mean..i pretty much understood what was going on but a lot of the time i just had to go “okay i’ll just accept this is happening whether it makes sense or not” haha! I enjoyed it though, poor Matt spending the majority of his last episode covered in prosthetic or whatever it is they use.

I was sort of confused about the whole growing old thing, i mean i know the 10th Doctor got old before but..if i remember correctly that was mostly the Master’s doing? I’d need to check that, but i sort of decided it was because it was his “last” form that he was aging. That’s not an official thing that’s just a theory. (Also the whole getting it to be that Eleven is the last regeneration thing was sneaky clever..i thought there was at least Capaldi left until we had to deal with that but of course there was John Hurt and then they used Ten’s regeneration-but-putting-all-the-energy-into-his-hand thing…..which i’d never really thought about but it’s fair enough!)

Many people (myself included) were happy to see Amy again! It was sweet! I know some felt it was a bit of a…putting Clara on a back step..which i get. Though i suppose i liken it a bit to the tenth Doctor going back to visit Rose last before regenerating..i know the relationship wasn’t exactly the same but it was clearly an important one! I’ll certainly look forward to seeing more of Clara with Twelve! Should be a lot of fun!

I know there was talk about the actual regeneration being a bit fast. I do understand this…it was…quite a powerful sneeze of regeneration i thought? HAHA!

I was worried for a moment because i thought once we saw him do the whole..explodey regeneration thing (to use the technical term there of course…) i thought Clara was going to head back into the TARDIS and just be faced with Capaldi. I didn’t want that. Was very happy to see lovely young Matt again for his last moments and he got an extremely beautiful final speech, especially knowing the relevance for both the Doctor and Matt at this point (and indeed any actor who has played him). I was interested to see Twelve appearing in Eleven’s clothes but i think it worked well..especially since he removed the bowtie…powerful moment!

But going back to the regeneration i think the whole slow face transition thing is quite important personally. I feel it’s sort of needed to feel all the emotion of them leaving…so we didn’t really get that…it was rather sudden. So i found that a bit sad but it didn’t bother me enough to hold a grudge over it or anything!

I’d love to know what you guys thought! I’ve seen many mixed reactions!

P.S. i loved that things were really well wrapped up for Matt’s Doctor! We got to see pretty much all of his biggest enemies from his series, we finally got a big moment for “silence will fall when the question is asked” and we got to see what was behind his hotel door!! Very clever!! =)

The clock is striking twelve…

Gallifrey falls no more!

I apologise if this isn’t a super exciting post i’m buried under university coursework at the moment but i couldn’t not talk about The Day of the Doctor!!

**THIS POST WILL CONTAIN SPOILERS**

Before i start i have to mention the program that was on on Thursday night “An Adventure in Space and Time” a drama showing how Doctor Who came to be, written by Mark Gatiss and staring David Bradley as William Hartnell. What an absolutely gorgeous program! I always trust Mark Gatiss to do spectacular writing but goodness it was so brilliant! I’ve no idea of HOW accurate the portrayal was but i didn’t really know anything about William Hartnell and it was strange to see him, he seemed quite difficult to work with! They did a good job in casting though making David Bradley look like him!

Showing the introduction of the Daleks was one of my favourite bits! So great! The guy who came in briefly as Patrick Troughton didn’t really look much like him xD but he wasn’t there for long! It was brilliant! Really emotional towards the end too! Apparently the use of the line “i don’t want to go” was on purpose…well that was painful.

But yes! I recommend it!

Anyway!

The Day of the Doctor!

I’m not going to ramble on and on about the plot but i thought it was a really good story! Really clever! And sets up a lot of ideas for the future which is fantastic of course!

I thought it was really clever how Ten and Rose were brought back. I think i just automatically expected that we would see parallel universe Ten and Rose somehow because to me that seemed the only way we could see them again, but i was happily proved wrong! I think it worked well…very clever!

Also, good to finally see some more back story on Queen Elizabeth I! Who we’ve heard little snippets about in previous episodes, plus there was the episode with Shakespeare (i think) where she came barging after him! Funny! xD

Oh…David Tennant, my Doctor. It was just lovely to see him back, seeing all his little quirks and he’s just perfect, seeing him and Matt Smith’s doctors together was just wonderful, provided some lovely comedy moments and John Hurt’s doctor fit in really well with them too! Had enough Doctor-like qualities but still was defined in himself as a character!

Brilliant to see the other doctors throughout! Very sneaky Tom Baker at the end was completely marvelous! Having myself not watched very much of classic Doctor Who, but having seen so many programs celebrating this show this week, i can tell Four was a special doctor indeed, i’m glad he got to have a part of it! It’s such a shame Christopher Eccleston didn’t seem to want to be involved, there was a brief moment of hope where we saw the War Doctor (John Hurt) regenerating when i thought we might see him properly..but no such luck. We did see his features start to appear though and he got a small clip when all the doctors were coming together to time-freeze Gallifrey.

OH! Let’s talk about that bit! That was a wonderful moment and i think it contained possibly my favourite point of the episode. Seeing them all come together was wonderful, especially things like seeing Ten in his old TARDIS, ahh good memories. But the moment we saw a flash of Peter Capaldi (the next Doctor) was just….WOW!

Made me super excited for Christmas to see what his Doctor will be like, although of course i will be devastated to see Matt leave!

Doctor no more…

EEK! So! It’s the build up to the Doctor Who 50th Anniversary on the 23rd of November. Who’d have thought it would come around so quickly! I’m SUPER looking forward to it!

There’s all manner of programs leading up to the day but there’s all sorts which i can’t remember off the top of my head, the information will be out there somewhere! Plus if you follow Doctor Who or Mark Gatiss or people on twitter, they’re likely to say these things!

Speaking of the magical Mr Gatiss! One program i am extremely looking forward to is “An Adventure in Space and Time” which he has written which will be on….BBC…2? i think on the 21st of November and 9pm. There was an advanced screening the other night and those who i’ve spoken to that were there said it was amazing! Caused a lot of emotion too apparently! Very excited to see that! David Bradley (probably best known from Harry Potter, but he’s all over the place..was in Dinosaurs in Space  episode of Doctor Who in a recent series!) as William Hartnell – the first Doctor! Pretty good likeness i think!

Here’s the TRAILER for that! Which we got today!

Speaking of Mark Gatiss and Doctor Who, as well as his appearance in The Lazarus Experiment episode of Doctor Who (and i’m sure he’s peaked into one or two more as well somewhere!) he was in a comedy sketch with David Williams a little while back! Amusing!

HERE it is!

Now!! As well as all these goodies today! (Gosh, might not survive until the 23rd..too much excitement!) we got a Doctor Who minisode! (…mini episode..clever no?). Which was SO exciting!! Link below!

The Night of the Doctor

**Spoilers for the minisode coming now**

Well, i’m sure especially fans of classic Doctor Who will certainly appreciate that! I must admit i have only really been watching since 2005 with Christopher Eccleston (i’ll have to get my hands on the rest some day!) but i still found it hugely exciting and it worked really well into helping us understand this new John Hurt Doctor…gosh it’s going to be so exciting!! It explains briefly the whole “not being the Doctor at this point” that they were eluding to in the most recent episode! Paul McGann seemed like a brilliant Doctor! (i hear it’s his birthday today…nice timing time lord!)

And of course while we’re here! Here is the TRAILER for the 50th anniversary itself!

Oh man. I am SO excited.

We all know everyone seems to have “their Doctor” and i would personally say that David Tennant is mine. I am beyond excited for him to be coming back in this role when i thought i would never see my Doctor again! That “Allon-sy” and “well…” that he does so brilliantly *SQUEAK*

Honestly, his last episode..i think i was already sobbing during the title credits. 45 minutes of crying…still not over his regeneration. Thinking back to Ten’s regeneration recently made me think about how sad i am going to be to see Matt go, he’s just so brilliant. Peter Capaldi will be a new experience though and i’m sure he’ll smash it!

Love seeing all the Ten and Eleven fun in the trailer! Comparing TARDIS designs and sonic screwdrivers and whatnot! Also very excited to see what John Hurt brings to the role! He’s an extraordinary actor i’m sure he’ll do us proud!

And of course, chuffed to see Rose back! My first companion of course! Excited to see what they do with her 🙂

I know i’ve used the word “excited” about a million times in this post but…that pretty much sums up my emotions!

And the clock strikes 12…

Well! There you have it, we have found out who will replace Matt Smith as the next Doctor!

And…as much as i didn’t expect it to be EXACTLY who everyone predicted..it is..

PETER CAPALDI!

peter-capaldi

I’m very excited i love him! He’s got quite a doctor-y look about him hasn’t he? xD

I’m very excited to see what they do with it..and i’ve taught myself to be open minded about this even since i went “who’s this guy? he’s never going to be better than Christopher Eccleston!”..i adored Nine of course and he was my first Doctor…but so far i’m still considering David Tennant as “my” Doctor!

Capaldi is 55 which is apparently the same age William Hartnell (the first Doctor) was when he started out! I’m happy they’ve gone for someone older actually because it’ll be awesome to see what they do with it given that in my own experience i’ve only seen Nine Ten and Eleven who all have been quite young, i’ve not really seen that sort of dynamic with the companion either! Hopefully they’ll be good buddies like Ten and Donna!!

BBC NEWS ARTICLE – This has some videos of the reveal and Peter introducing himself as the Doctor

Also, here’s his IMDB PAGE which i’ve been scrolling through myself to see what he’s been in up until now.

I think i first saw him in the Vicar of Dibley which he’s in about 2 episodes of, very funny and some classic moments of the show! He’s probably most famous for The Thick of It, i’ve not seen much of that myself but i might give it a watch soon, my dad likes it! (Lets hope there aren’t too many young children now typing him into Youtube and finding THAT!…many MANYYY swears per second from his particular character xD!)

He’s been in Doctor Who before which many know, with Ten and Donna, the Fires of Pompeii, lucky Donna persuaded him to save that family eh. Also, he was in series 3 of Torchwood – Children of Earth. Ugh, that series was so heartbreaking i might cry just thinking about it. His character has a very sad story line throughout the 5 episodes but he was very brilliant in it!!

Also for anyone who has stumbled upon the 6 episode TV show made by Hugh Laurie a good while ago, Fortysomething, he’s in that too! Work’s with Hugh’s character i think, he’s quite mad, very funny! I watched an episode of that with my friend who is a big Hugh Laurie fan (so am i for that matter!) and then i revisited on becoming a fan of Benedict Cumberbatch, who plays Hugh Laurie’s son. It’s very sweet they’re all so young! Plus Sheila Hancock is in it!

It will be extremely sad to see Matt go, David Tennant had a big impact on me and the thought of his regeneration still makes me sad, but Matt will have been the Doctor pretty much for the same amount of time and i know he’s had that same impact on many many people..and also..let’s face it..he’s been absolutely brilliant! I knew he was going to be good when i saw him in his reveal show a good few years ago now, lets hope it’s the same for the next one! And of course, Jenna Louise Coleman will be staying as the companion for a while =D!

So what do you lot think? First impressions of Twelve? Did you have any good ideas of who it would be before the announcement?

Geronimo!
